Description
Two well documented cases of tradewind disturbances are studied. One disturbance developed into Hurricane Carla (1961) while the other failed to intensify. Initially the two cases appeared to be very similar but on closer inspection the flow patterns in which the disturbances were embedded proved to have significant differences. This paper describes these differences.

This paper presents a diagnostic study of two models proposed by Betts (1973a). The first was a model for a well-mixed sub-cloud layer capped by a more stable transition layer. Digital imagery from the SMS 2 geostationary satellite was recorded for analysis in support of the Sierra Cooperative Pilot Project. Imagery of five storms during the 1976 77 and 1977 78 seasons of the project were analyzed. Description
A linear theory is given for the case of steady thermal convection in a stratified fluid with a general thermal boundary condition at the upper and lower limits of the system. The theory is applied to a number of fluid systems and the results are discussed in terms of the Rayleigh number, the horizontal wave number and the vertical velocity and temperature perturbation profiles in the vertical.
